Historical information about the Sd.Kfz.184 "Ferdinand"
The Sd.Kfz.184 "Ferdinand" tank destroyer was developed on the basis of the unsuccessful Tiger (P) tank project by Ferdinand Porsche. Instead of a typical tank, a specialized tank destroyer construction was chosen, armed with the legendary PaK 43/2 L/71 88 mm anti-tank gun. The vehicle was renowned for its excellent firepower and thick frontal armor—which made it one of the most formidable tank hunters of its era.
The Ferdinands were used in combat for the first time during the Battle of Kursk in 1943, fighting mainly on the Eastern Front. Despite their powerful firepower, their effectiveness was limited by weak side armor, lack of infantry defense, and mobility issues. After upgrades in 1944, they entered service as the "Elefant."
