Historical description of Mitsubishi A5M2b Type 96 Claude

The Mitsubishi A5M2b Type 96, known by the Allied codename "Claude," was the world's first mass-produced monoplane fighter aircraft designed for carrier operations. It was a breakthrough in aircraft design by Jiro Horikoshi – the renowned engineer who later created the legendary Zero. A5M aircraft made their combat debut in the late 1930s during the conflicts in China and also took part in initial World War II operations in the Pacific.

The A5M2b version was improved with a more powerful Nakajima Kotobuki 4 engine, a three-blade metal propeller, and an enclosed cockpit canopy. Interestingly, the closed cockpit was not favored by Japanese pilots and was abandoned in the subsequent A5M4 version. Nonetheless, the Claude secured its place in aviation history as a symbol of the transition from biplanes to modern monoplane designs.

Features of the Fine Molds FB20 IJN A5M2b Type 96 Claude 1/48 model

Recommendation and difficulty level

I especially recommend the Fine Molds FB20 IJN A5M2b Type 96 Claude 1/48 kit to modelers interested in Far East aviation, collectors of Japanese military machines, and anyone interested in the history of aviation from the late 1930s and 1940s. I rate the difficulty level at 3/5 – the kit requires some skill, but thanks to the high precision of manufacturing and the instructions, the assembly process is clear and satisfying.

The set does not include glue or paints – we recommend using dedicated modelers' supplies as well as cutting and sanding tools to complete the model.

Scale
1/48

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
