Historical Background of the Gneisenau

Gneisenau, the second vessel of the Scharnhorst class, was launched on December 8, 1936, in Kiel. She entered service on May 21, 1938, as a battlecruiser of the German Kriegsmarine. Together with her sister ship Scharnhorst, she went down in history thanks to spectacular operations in the Atlantic against Allied fleets and raids on convoys. Among her most notable successes was the sinking of the British aircraft carrier Glorious and two destroyers during the Battle of the North Sea in 1940. In 1941, accompanied by the Scharnhorst, the ship conducted a successful Atlantic operation, sinking 22 Allied merchant ships and seriously disrupting shipping lanes. Unfortunately, in 1942, she was seriously damaged in an RAF air raid and never returned to active combat service. Finally, in 1945, she was sunk in Gdynia as a harbor blockade.
