The real F8F-1B Bearcat was the last generation of Grumman's piston-engine fighters, designed for use on United States Navy aircraft carriers. It was developed as a result of experience with previous designs such as the Hellcat and Tigercat. The main characteristic of the Bearcat is its exceptional maneuverability and impressive power-to-weight ratio—the aircraft, equipped with a powerful Pratt & Whitney R-2800 engine, was one of the fastest fighters of its era, also achieving an excellent rate of climb (as much as 30% greater than the Hellcat).

The Bearcat served primarily in the US Navy, with the first units flying in August 1944. Although it appeared at the end of World War II, its active service was mainly in the postwar period and the onset of the Cold War. It was also used in the navies of France, Thailand, and other countries, taking part in colonial conflicts, including the war in Indochina.
