Brief Historical Overview

The Macchi MC.202 Folgore, designed by Mario Castoldi, was a development of the earlier MC.200. The prototype's maiden flight occurred on August 10, 1940—already then it confirmed excellent aerodynamic characteristics and new armament. Italian-German cooperation enabled the use of the DB 601 engine, providing outstanding performance compared to its Allied opponents. Produced from April 1941 at Macchi, Breda, and SAI factories, it was delivered to Regia Aeronautica units stationed in Africa, Sicily, and to the Italian contingent fighting in Russia. From November 1941, the Folgore fought over the Mediterranean and North Africa, gaining an advantage over Hurricanes and P-40s. After 1943, it was used by both sides of the conflict in Italy, as well as by a few Luftwaffe and Croatian units.
