The Shimakaze destroyer was a unique project executed by the Imperial Japanese Navy (Koku Nihon Kaigun). The vessel was built in response to the admiralty’s need for an ultra-fast ship with powerful weaponry. Shimakaze reached speeds of up to 40 knots and was equipped with innovative torpedo armament — five triple 610 mm type 93 “Long Lance” torpedo launchers, regarded as the most effective in the Pacific Ocean. The “F52” project, approved as part of the “Maru Yon” plan (1939), also included three twin 127 mm main gun turrets. Shimakaze was commissioned in 1943 and served until the end of the war, taking part, among others, in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
