Heinkel He-280 – a brief historical overview

The Heinkel He-280 was designed and manufactured in Germany as the first fighter aircraft to use jet propulsion, with its maiden flight taking place in April 1941. The aircraft was a further development of the pioneering He 178, but differed from it in almost every aspect: a new twin-engine configuration was adopted, the wings and tail unit were redesigned, and armament consisted of three MG151 20mm cannons. Achieving a remarkable speed of 820 km/h for its time, the He-280 represented a true revolution. Unfortunately, due to issues with propulsion (the Heinkel HeS-8A engines were known for their unreliability) and a lack of sufficient support from the Reich Air Ministry, the project never entered serial production. In total, only eight prototypes were built, and the aircraft went down in history as a technological pioneer of the WWII era.
