The Italeri 6551 KANGAROO model in 1/35 scale is a faithful replica of the famous Kangaroo armored personnel carrier, used by British and Canadian forces during World War II. "Kangaroo" was a field term used by the Allies for specially adapted armored vehicles, created as makeshift conversions of obsolete tanks and self-propelled guns, such as the M7 Priest, into versatile infantry transporters.

The idea of converting combat vehicles into personnel carriers was initiated by General Guy Simonds during the 1944 campaign in France, to provide soldiers with safe transport to the front line. The Kangaroo offered protection against artillery fire and machine guns, greatly increasing soldiers' chances of survival during assaults. The first Kangaroos were used during Operation Totalize in Normandy, and their numbers quickly grew thanks to successful combat trials. Armament variants included heavy and light Browning .50 and .30 machine guns, and sometimes Boys anti-tank rifles.
