FLAKPANZER IV WIRBELWIND – history of the original

The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind (German for “Whirlwind”) was based on the chassis of the Panzer IV tank and developed by the German army towards the end of World War II, at a time when the Allies dominated the air. It was produced from mid-1944 until the end of the war. Armed with a quadruple 2 cm Flakvierling 38 anti-aircraft gun, the Wirbelwind was mainly used in Wehrmacht armored units, including on both the Western and Eastern fronts. Its main role was to defend armored columns and military formations from air attacks. The characteristic open-topped, nine-sided turret protected the crew from shrapnel and small arms fire.
