Historical description of the Argentina Maru ship

The Argentina Maru was an ocean-going cargo liner built for the Japanese company Osaka Shosen Kaisha (now Mitsui O.S.K. Lines). Built in the 1930s, it originally served as a luxury passenger liner operating on routes between Japan and South America, mainly to ports in Argentina. During World War II, the ship was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Navy and converted into a military transport vessel.

The Argentina Maru exemplifies the unique conversion of civilian ships for wartime needs, serving both passenger and transport roles. It participated in, among others, maritime convoys on the Pacific, where it was sunk in January 1944 by an American submarine during a military transport mission.

What does the scale of the model mean?

A model scale designation such as 1:30 means the model is 30 times smaller than the original. Scale indicates proportion, not resolution or detail.

  • Models with a smaller number after the colon (e.g. 1:48, 1:32) are larger and have more detail.
  • Scales with higher numbers (e.g. 1:164, 1:200, 1:350) are smaller - good for collections, dioramas, or displaying many models together.
