A brief history of the Avia S-199

The Avia S-199 was a post-war Czech adaptation of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109G fighter. Manufactured in Czechoslovakia from 1947 to 1949, it was fitted with Jumo 211F engines due to shortages of original Daimler-Benz engines after the war. These aircraft reached the Israeli Air Force during the war of independence (the 1948 Arab–Israeli War). Nicknamed "Sakin" (knife) by the Israelis, they enabled the defense of the young state despite operational imperfections and challenging flight characteristics. The Avia S-199 was primarily used by Czechoslovakia and Israel in the post-war years and during the 1948 war.
