Su prototipo voló por primera vez en 1946, y los modelos de producción entraron en servicio entre 1951 y 1954, marcando el período de intenso desarrollo de la aviación a reacción conocido como la Guerra Fría. El Attacker se utilizó principalmente para entrenamiento y apoyo inicial a los portaaviones de la Royal Navy antes de ser reemplazado por diseños más avanzados.
