Vought F4U Corsair był jednym z najlepszych i najsłynniejszych samolotów myśliwskich II wojny światowej. Prace nad nim rozpoczęto już w 1938 roku, ale produkcję seryjną uruchomiono dopiero w połowie 1942 roku. Początkowo zdyskwalifikowany ze służby na pokładach lotniskowców, Corsair trafił przede wszystkim do wyposażenia operujących z baz lądowych dywizjonów myśliwskich US Marine Corps.

To właśnie na południowym Pacyfiku Corsairy udowodniły swoją wartość bojową i zdobyły zasłużoną sławę.

The Vought F4U Corsair was one of the best and most famous fighter aircraft of World War II. Work on it began as early as 1938, but serial production did not begin until mid-1942. Initially disqualified from service aboard aircraft carriers, the Corsair found its way primarily into the equipment of US Marine Corps fighter squadrons operating from land bases.

Volume 1 describes the history of the aircraft's inception and development - from the XF4U-1 prototype, through the F4U-1, F4U-1A and F4U-1D serial versions, to the F4U-2 night version and the XF4U-3 high-altitude version prototypes. Another chapter is devoted to the painting and markings of Corsairs serving in the US Navy and US Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. The most comprehensive part of the book describes the operations of Corsair units during the Solomon Islands campaign and over the Japanese stronghold of Rabaul from February 1943 to March 1944. It was in the South Pacific that the Corsairs proved their combat value and won well-deserved fame.
